Wakeboarding is a board water sport that was born in California from the fusion of water skiing and surfing. It changed the world of classic water skiing at the same speed that snowboarding did with snow skiing in the 90s. The idea was pretty simple: to be towed by a boat while riding a surfboard. Normal surfboards were too long, so they developed the so-called "Skurfer" which established a mix between water skiing and surfboard, it was fine but too heavy in terms of maneuverability. In 1990 Herb O'Brien, owner of a water ski company built the first prototype of a wakeboard: the Hyperlite, a flat board with a reduced volume that is easier to control than the Skurfer. In 1990 wakeboard guru Jimmy Redmon founded the World Wake Association (WWA) in Winter Park Florida and two years later wakeboarding became an official sport. The British were the first to bring wakeboarding to a circuit where you are pulled by the cable and subsequently to create a regulation for it. Since wakeboard was accepted at the American X-Games, the wave also overwhelmed Europe, the media and the sports industry accepted wakeboarding as a trend sport already long time ago. In 1997 Swatch and O'Neill did the Wake Attack Tour, the first tour where the public could participate in and further stimulate people to practice the sport. The new generation of boards was more similar to freestyle snowboards than surfboards and unlike water skiing, wakeboarding, thanks to the use of a short and flexible board, allows radical jumps to a level never seen before; the expressiveness, creativity, aggressiveness and height of the jumps make it extremely interesting to the viewer's eye.
